Throughout the cold war, the United States planned multiple operations to influence many Latin American governments. They named one of these operations Operation Condor. Operation Condor was a United States back project that planned the assassination of the opponents of the United States. This was a joint effort with the United States with some Latin American countries. This operation would lead to thousands of death around Latin America. The United States government would target opponents that lean into the idea of communism and exclude them.
This document is a summarized intelligence report about project Condor in Latin America. This document is written by Robert Scherrer FBI’s attaché and talks about special teams that could travel outside of the country and carry out assassination plans within the targeted country. “The formation of Special Teams from Members countries who are to travel anywhere in the world to non-member countries to carry out sanctions up to assassination against terrorists or supporters of terrorists” [1]. This document also mentions that Chile is the center of this operation and would see that the special teams are ready to go into Chile. This document highlights the United States’ involvement behind the curtain and indicates what the United States is willing to examine.
This fit into my overall project because this document was made after the coup and shows that the United States was still involved in targeting people who fought against the new government. This shows us the view of outside nations. This document was published by National Security Archive with the author being Peter Kornbluh. This was published to show new information relating to the 1973 Chile coupe.
