This source is about a military officer that became mayor of a town after supporting and serving Pinochet’s new government. Deichle was a general of the Chilean army that served before and after the coup of 1973 Chile. After helping in the coup overthrowing Allende’s government, he would be placed in power by working as a mayor of a small town in Chile. Deichle would describe his experience of the events leading up to the coup and working as a mayor. Deichle favored Pinochet’s government over Allende’s government and would gave a supportive view of the Regime.
Here we can have a better understanding of what the people in Pinochet’s government felt and thought during this time Period. With this piece of information, we can slowly put the whole story together. These primary sources are collected by Journalists Politzer,Patrica and would be placed in a book showing the point of view of the people.
“Popular unity was a dreadful thing. Education was bad, distribution was bad, transportation was bad, everything was bad”[1] Deichle describes his disapproval of the Allende government and explains that the people of Chile are suffering from poor living conditions. Deichle would claim that he did not know about the coup that happen on September 11th, 1973, and would continue to help and serve Pinochet’s new government during the attack. After the coup, he became mayor of a small town and state enormous success because of the new government. “My thirty primary schools and my two high schools hadn’t seen a drop of paint in twenty years, now they’re all freshly painted, with clean, sanitary bathrooms”[2], based on Deichle words we can see that from his point of view, Pinochet’s new government has a positive impact on the people lives in Chile.
Deichle would have a unique perception of the whole situation based on his years of military service. Throughout his work as a mayor, he always believe that he and the Armed forces knew what was best for Chile he said “In the Army, in the navy, in the air force and the police force, we all think the best and the best is what is happing” [3] Deichle believe that he was helping his people and working for a better future for Chile.
